Apple patents volume controls in the browser

Oh, great, now it’s never gonna happen. Couldn’t someone at Mozilla think of it first?

Want to know when I post new content to my blog? It's a simple as registering for free to an RSS aggregator (Feedly, NewsBlur, Inoreader, …) and adding www.ff00aa.com to your feeds (or www.garoo.net if you want to subscribe to all my topics). We don't need newsletters, and we don't need Twitter; RSS still exists.

What makes me saddest about this is why a) patent it and b) only for a browser? Why is there no per-app volume control in OSX? Linux has had it for a while, and I believe Windows does now, too (though I haven't checked).

Well, per-app volume control is one thing (and I agree that it's needed, no idea about whether it's in Windows), but the browser is the one application where it would really make sense to have a volume slider right in the menu bar; for the other applications you can set the volume once to your liking and never touch it again.
