I never realized (or forgot) how much of NeXTstep’s visual distinctiveness owed to the 2-bit monochrome monitor (white, black, light and dark gray) they introduced alongside the NeXTstation in 1990.

Which means that for the first two years the OS was… black and white? Visuals are otherwise completely identical, and they look so wrong with white button faces that I want to assume the shades-of-gray monitor was planned from the start.

Want to know when I post new content to my blog? It's a simple as registering for free to an RSS aggregator (Feedly, NewsBlur, Inoreader, …) and adding www.ff00aa.com to your feeds (or www.garoo.net if you want to subscribe to all my topics). We don't need newsletters, and we don't need Twitter; RSS still exists.
