What bothers me most about the unsolicited “defense” of “ordinary people” is the promulgation of learned helplessness.

Despite the ever growing importance of computers in our lives, ordinary people are supposed to remain eternally ignorant, their devices and operating systems locked down by the vendor, preventing them from becoming “power users” and taking control of their own computing experience, no matter how much time they spent using and relying on their computers.

Want to know when I post new content to my blog? It's a simple as registering for free to an RSS aggregator (Feedly, NewsBlur, Inoreader, …) and adding to your feeds (or if you want to subscribe to all my topics). We don't need newsletters, and we don't need Twitter; RSS still exists.
